Aston Old Edwardians 3 vs Whitchurch 34

Whitchurch travelled to Birmingham last Saturday on a wet Saturday afternoon hoping to keep the winning run going. They lost the toss and were given the advantage in the first half of a sloping pitch. Whitchurch started the stronger and were camped in the opposition half and in the 5th. minute Elliott Horton piled through a stubborn defence for the first try.  The Birmingham side then defended well and with the wet conditions the ball was dropped on numerous occasions by both sides and both teams cancelled each other out for the next 20 minutes. Then after Whitchurch coming in from the side Aston were awarded a penalty and converted to get them back in the game. Just 3 minutes later Whitchurch were lucky following a big kick into opposition territory by Danny Nicholas the ball was fumbled on the line by the full back allowing Ben Mason to pounce and take the ball over for a try  and this left the score at half time 10:3

Any thoughts of struggling playing up the hill in the second half disappeared in the second minute when Ben Mason ran a good line to go through the defence to touch down under the posts for Robbie Leighton to convert. Aston tried hard and were kept out by a resilient Whitchurch defence with some hard defensive work. Then half way through the half the home team were weakening and following  a scrum on the half way line the ball came out to Jake Dodwell who swerved past 4 defenders avoiding tackles before passing to Ben mason for his hat trick try of the game converted by Leighton.

Whitchurch were now piling on the pressure in the last 10 minutes, and Mason again broke through tackles before passing to Leighton to score the 5th. try. In the final minute Aston were defending and failed to kick the ball far enough away and Liam Udy caught it on the 22 metre line ran directly towards the line but was tackled just a couple of metres short of the line but managed to recycle the ball for Steve Bloore to score in the corner. This was a strong performance in difficult playing conditions and leaves Whitchurch in 2nd. place in the league. Next week Shrewsbury who are 1 place behind them in the league promises to be a good game.
